Support the Library
Western Counties Regional Library welcomes all charitable donations.
Memorial gifts are made to honor the memory of a person who has passed away and can be used to express sympathy to the family.
Tribute gifts are made to honor a living individual. This is a wonderful opportunity to recognize a birthday or anniversary, to celebrate a milestone such as a promotion, graduation, or to express congratulations upon the birth of a child.
Donation boxes are available at the circulation desk of all branch libraries.
Special promotions such as raffles, yard sales, penny campaigns, are held at various times throughout the year. Special promotions are developed to meet, or enhance the fundraising goals of the library. The goal each year is to raise 3% of the library's operating budget.
To make a donation, please contact your local library or click on the Donate button below.
Gifts & Donations Policy
a. Cash Donations
The Board encourages gifts of money and bequests from the public through its Charitable Association. Tax receipts for cash donations over $10 will be issued upon request. Unless otherwise specified when given, donations normally go towards building the library’s collection and items purchased for the circulating collection are made available for any library cardholder to borrow.
If the donor wishes to specify how the money is to be used, a special agreement must be made with the library when the donation is made.
The donor should fill out the Donation Form, Memorial Donation Form or the In Honour of Donation Form..
Donations will be appropriately recognized. Recognition will include a written acknowledgement. The donor can choose whether or not to be acknowledged on a bookplate, which can honour a special individual or group, or recognize a memorial donation.
b. Used Materials
Donations of used books and other materials are welcomed under certain conditions. Staff determines whether materials are acceptable and if they can be used to augment the library’s collection.
The library does not accept Reader’s Digest Condensed Books, Harlequin romances and other similar paperback romances, magazines, sets of encyclopedias more than five years old, or books in poor physical condition.
It is understood that the Regional Library is free to use and assign such gifts as it sees fit in order to obtain the maximum value and use from such material. Materials that the library does not need for its collection may be sold in library book sales or otherwise disposed of in an appropriate manner.
As a general rule, the library does not provide tax receipts for book donations.
The donor should fill out the Book Donation Policy and Form.

Volunteers
a. Role of Volunteers
The Board values the contributions that volunteers make to the library. Volunteers can enhance the provision of special programs at its branches, assisting paid staff in the preparation and delivery of these programs.
Staff will identify positions available for volunteers.
All volunteers must complete a volunteer application form. A satisfactory criminal records and child abuse registry check is also required for any volunteers who will interact with the public. Once a volunteer’s application is approved, the library will provide appropriate training, adequate supervision and regular assessments. The goal is to ensure that the volunteer gains valuable experience in a pleasant work environment, while providing the library with valuable assistance.
Western Counties Regional Library reserves the right to decline any volunteer application.
b. Friends of the Library Groups
The Board encourages the establishment of a Friends of the Library (FOL) group for every branch. FOL groups can be powerful advocates for their libraries. They raise funds for local projects and can support regional fundraising initiatives. The library will support the establishment of FOL groups. Branch staff should maintain ongoing contact as appropriate.
c. Book Sales in Cooperation with Friends of the Library Groups
Book sales may be conducted in cooperation with Friends of the Library groups, providing the following criteria are met:
- The Regional Library will provide the books to be sold and will deliver them to the nearest library branch. Additional books may be gathered by the Friends to add to the sale.
- The Friends agree to provide the labour to unpack, arrange and conduct the sale at the library branch and to transport the books if the sale is at a location other than the library branch.
- The books must be sold at the price established by the Regional Library Board.
- The Friends will be responsible for the disposal of any leftover books at the end of the sale.
- Profits will be split on a 50/50 basis between the Friends group and the Regional Library.
- The Regional Library will arrange for usual publicity before the sale.
- Timing for the sale and for other related activities will be made by mutual agreement between the Friends group and the staff.
