Membership
Membership is free to all adults and children residing in Digby, Shelburne and Yarmouth counties. Children under 14 need to have signed parental consent for membership.
Membership will expire after 3 years unless renewed.
You may apply for a card at any of our 10 library branches or use our online registration form.
Important Message for Parents:
It is the policy of our Library Board to provide free and equal access to all resources of the library, including the Internet, to all library users, including children and young people. The Board does not presume to decide which materials your child may or may not read. This decision is left to the individual parent.
General Membership Privileges
You may borrow unlimited books or magazines from any of our library branches.
Certain restrictions may be placed on very popular items, AV materials and on subject material in short supply. WCRL does not lend out microform or reference materials. They are for IN LIBRARY USE ONLY.
The loan period is three weeks for items borrowed at a library branch.
Two renewals are allowed on items unless there is a prior request for that item. Items can be renewed online through your Library Account, or by contacting the branch in person or by telephone.

Responsibilities
Please return loaned items on time as a courtesy to other patrons. Having more than three overdue items or more than $30.00 in fines will result in your account being blocked until the items have been returned and fines paid. If a patron has more than 5 claims returned items on their account, their borrowing privileges will be suspended.
Fines for overdue loans are: 25¢ per day for all adult loans except videos and dvds which are $1.00 per day; 10¢ per day for all children's loans except videos and dvds which are $1.00 per day. All Interlibrary loans are $1.00 per day. Patrons are also responsible for paying for any damages to library materials. (for a list of charges click here) and replacement costs for lost ltems. It is the policy of WCRL not to accept substitutions or replacement copies for lost or damaged items.
Specific Categories
- Educator Card is designed for home schoolers, teachers, literacy
tutors, daycare workers, etc. who wish to borrow items to use in their
classrooms. The loan period is six weeks with two optional renewals of six weeks each.
Fines are not charged for overdue materials, but card holders are responsible for lost or damaged items and privileges will be suspended if overdues exceed 10 items. The Educator card cannot be used to borrow through Interlibrary Loan or Library Express.

- Institutional Card is for nursing homes, senior citizens’ homes,
schools and other institutions where deposits of library books are left on a regular basis. Loans are for 8 weeks with one
8 week renewal. Fines are not charged for Institutional loans.

- Courtesy Card is available to any Canadian citizen who would like to have library privileges in our area. There is no fee for a Courtesy card, which can be obtained at any library branch. General membership rules apply.
- Visitor Card is available for anyone from outside Canada who is visiting in the area for fewer than three months. Visitor cards are available at any of our branches for a monthly fee of $5.00. General membership rules apply.
- Special Needs Card is for any resident who is print disabled because of a visual, physical or learning disability. Loans are four weeks and members have access to talking books and descriptive videos.
