Internet

The Board provides public Internet access at all library branches as part of its mission to make informational, educational, recreational and cultural resources available to all users.

To enable everyone to have fair and equal access to the Internet, the Board has set guidelines and policies for Internet use and has taken steps to ensure that all users are familiar with these.

New users must agree to abide by the User Indemnity and Release and by the Internet Code of Ethics when they complete the Library Membership Application form. An online disclaimer on public computers explains the responsibilities of the Library, the User and the Parents of minor children

a. User Release and Indemnity Form

Applicants for library membership must read and agree to abide by the User Indemnity and Release and the Internet Code of Ethics and sign the Library Membership Application form. Users under 14 must have their Library Membership form, which includes the agreement that child will abide by the User Indemnity and Release and the Internet Code of Ethics, signed by a parent or guardian.

b. Internet Code of Ethics

Everyone using the public library computers is expected to make responsible, ethical use of the Internet.

Responsible, ethical use includes:

  • Using the Internet for educational, informational, recreational and cultural purposes only, and not for unauthorized, illegal and unethical purposes

  • Not attempting to modify or gain access to files, passwords or data belonging to others; not seeking unauthorized access to any computer system; not damaging or altering software components of any network or database

  • Not sending, receiving or displaying text or graphics which may reasonably be construed as obscene

Users in violation of the Internet Code of Ethics may have their Internet privileges revoked. Repeated violations will result in being barred from the library and in the denial of library privileges.

c. Disclaimer

A Disclaimer is posted online which explains the responsibilities of the library, the Internet user, and the parents or guardians of minor children using the Internet.

The Disclaimer advises users that:

  • The Internet may contain material of a controversial or inappropriate nature. The library can neither censor access to material nor protect users from offensive information.

  • Parents of minor children must assume responsibility for their children’s use of the Internet at library computers.

  • Not all Internet sites provide reliable, complete, age-appropriate or current information. The library cannot control the contnt of pages of sites on the Internet. It is up to the user to determine the value of the information found.
