Digby Basin and Gap from Smith's Cove
A few Loyalists became inhabitants of Smith's and Soulis' Coves in Hillsburgh. Messrs.
Benjamin Nathaniel and Elijah Jones settled on the farm just east of Chute's Creek, now
owned by George T. Cossett, Esq.; John Lawson, of Digby, lived on William Cossett's farm
a few years; Thomas Watt on farm of Jabez Snow; Alexander Thompson on that of Spurgeon
Weir; Lawrence Van Horne on eastern side of same lot; Thomas Ellis on adjoining lot now
owned by Charles T. Potter, Esq. While some contend that no other settlers lived west of
Smith's Creek in last century, others believe several of the intervening lots were then
inhabited. Dr. Abraham Florentine appears to have resided for a time in that vicinity. Mr.
Joseph Smith succeeded Joseph Potter on Lot No. 10, east of Smith's Creek; Daniel Soulis on farm
now owned by Mr. Charles N. Soulis; Daniel Odell on farm owned by Thomas O. Morgan. The remainder
of present Hillsburgh Township was then a Wilderness.
