2010 Summer Reading Club

Monday, June 28 to Saturday, Aug. 21

This is a fun summer reading club where children, teens and adults get a chance to read some great books, win some great prizes and participate in some mysterious and exciting activities and programs. Register for the Summer Reading Club beginning on Monday, June 28 to participate in the reading club and to be eligible to win prizes and reading rewards.

Display: Fine Art Originals

Beginning June 29 during open hours

Former Digby resident and artist Deborah Landers has two of her works on display in the program room of the library during open hours beginning on June 29. The artist specializes in landscapes, stills and architecture.

Summer Reading Club: Into the Jungle

Tuesday, July 20, 2 p.m.

Youth ages six to 12 will be singing and doing group drumming practice on Tuesday, July 20 at 2 p.m.  Participants are asked to register ahead of time. Come and sign up for the club and enter a summer of jungle adventure. Children who complete their reading goals will earn a FastPass to Upper Clements Park and enter the grand prize draw for a bicycle from Digby Canadian Tire.

Wii Sports!

Saturdays, July 24 and 31, 12 p.m.

Youth ages 12 and older can bring in their friends and challenge each other at Nintendo Wii Sports. This is a free drop-in program.

Youth ages six to 12 will record a podcast of group drumming and music on Tuesday, July 27 at 2 p.m.  Participants are asked to register ahead of time. Youth ages six to 12 will create crafts, enjoy music and play podcasts on Tuesday, Aug. 10 at 2 p.m.  Participants are asked to register ahead of time. Come and sign up for the club and enter a summer of jungle adventure. Children who complete their reading goals will earn a FastPass to Upper Clements Park and enter the grand prize draw for a bicycle from Digby Canadian Tire.

University Prep

Monday, Aug. 16, 6 p.m.

University Prep is a program for students entering first-year university in the fall and begins at 6 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 16 at the Digby library. The program offers must-know skills for succeeding in your first year at university. It includes how to make the transition academically from high school to university, avoid procrastination, maximize your productivity, research and write papers and organize yourself. There is no pre-registration for this program. 

Microwave Cuisine and Candy Making

Tuesday, Aug. 17, 6 p.m.

Teens 13 to 17 can learn to make macaroni and cheese, chocolate cake, and candy with nothing more than a microwave beginning at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 17 at the Digby library. Participants are asked to register by Saturday, Aug. 14 by calling the library at 245-2163 or e-mailing digbyintern@gmail.com.

Mad Science

Saturday, Aug. 21, 1 p.m.

Teens 13 to 17 can conduct their own science experiments at the Digby library on Saturday, Aug. 21 at 1 p.m. Participants will make a diet cola and Mentos geyser, a foam fountain, and a mini hovercraft. Videotape your experiment, edit the footage, and burn it to a DVD. There is no registration necessary for this program.

Where Do the Children Play?

Wednesday, Sept. 22, 6:30 to 2 p.m.

Join us for a viewing of the movie “Where Do the Children Play?” The documentary is for any adult who is interested in helping to connect more children and youth with nature for all the benefits it brings. The movie is the brainchild of Elizabeth Goodenough. It examines the social and technological trends that conspire to rob children of their birthright: time and opportunity for unstructured, spontaneous play, especially outdoors in nature. The program is part of Recreation Nova Scotia’s Take Me Outside Week, Sept. 19-26.
