Church of the Nativity Property
Church of the Nativity, Sandy Cove
1844
|
An inscription in the lectern Bible reads
"Presented to the Church of the Nativity on the occasion of the consecration by Bishop John Inglis, August 7, 1844".
The 150th anniversary of this building was held one year after being registered. The church held the anniversary on the same day 150 years later August 7, 1994. The Bishop of Nova Scotia, Arthur Peters, attended.
Reverend William Bullock was the first rector of the church. He was noted as the first Dean of Nova Scotia in 1864, and is also remembered for a hymn he wrote in 1851 "We Love the Place O Lord" which still appears in many hymnaries either as originally composed by Dr. Bullock or in the adaptation from the pen of Sir Henry Williams Baker. Following Dr. Bullock, in 1848 the Reverend T. Maynard became rector for four years. The longest pastorate was the 23-year incumbency of the Rev. John Ambrose which began in 1870. This was one year longer than Rev. William Driffield 1908-1930.
