Baptist & Methodists Property
Sandy Cove Road, Sandy Cove
1849
|
Tradition says that John Chipman Morse personally built this church and later his home which still stands across from the church. The land was deeded to the settlement in 1802 by Morris Peters for a burying ground. In 1849 the church was built by the Methodists and Baptists together. The building was opened on July 22, 1849. The bell tower was added later, presumably 1886, as this is the date inscribed on the bell. The longest term of ministry goes to John Chipman Morse 1849-1903, Then to Rev. C.L. Chute from 1927-1940. The church is planning a historic anniversary on August 15, 1999, it being their 150th anniversary. The church stands majestically upon a hill overlooking the St. Mary's Bay and the village of Sandy Cove. The church still maintains its original windows. The church has a painting of John Chipman Morse.

This church has a very stylish window in the back. Handmade wood hand pointing to heaven was made by Ralph Pardy of Bear River.
